A quarter of the country’s total area is divided into eleven different regions turned into national parks and wildlife reserves. This country aims to be a leader in ecotourism and has been actively protecting its wildlife for over 50 years now.

There will always be something interesting to see wherever you look: caves, canals, lakes, lagoons, waterfalls, rivers and volcanoes. Add to these an array of ancient relics dating from the pre-Columbian era as well as various flora and fauna.

Among the most popular national parks in the country is the Manuel Antonio National Park. Here you can hike, swim, walk, have a picnic and see wildlife like ocelots, anteaters, pelicans and eagles.

Another great attraction is Tortuguero National Park which is home to monkeys, different species of birds including the toucan and to marine life like the giant sea turtle and manatee. Cahuita National Park on the Caribbean coast is great for snorkeling and boasts pristine white sand beaches.

When visiting Costa Rican national parks, be sure to enlist the help of a guide or a ranger. Most of these parks have maintained trails however they tend to be lost during heavy rains. Never risk exploring these beauty spots on your own.
